SOUTHEND United will travel to Premier League giants Liverpool in the third round of the FA Cup — if they can win at Oldham Athletic next week.

Blues drew 1-1 with the Latics at Roots Hall on Saturday.

And if they triumph in the second round replay at Boundary Park they will be off to Anfield.

But the club’s chief executive Tara Brady is refusing to get too excited at this stage.

“It would be a fantastic day for the football club and it’s a very exciting draw but it will be a very hard game at Oldham,” said Brady.

“There’s no point in getting carried away at this stage because we don’t know if it’s even going to be happening.

“Oldham were hard to break down at the weekend but we played much better in the second half and hopefully we can go there and win now.

“There’s no greater incentive than a game at Liverpool in the next round and the team will be really fired up to win.

“A victory would also be a huge financial benefit for the football club but it’s impossible to say right now just how much a game at Liverpool would earn either ourselves or Oldham.”

A second half equaliser from Blues winger Ryan Hall ensured Saturday’s game ended in a 1-1 draw after James Wesolowski had earlier fired Oldham in front.

The replay will take place a week tomorrow, unless its selected to be shown on television, and Southend will be wanting to avoid a repeat of 2004 when they lost a second round replay at Scarborough and missed out on a home tie against Chelsea.

However, if Blues do triumph at Boundary Park then it will not be the first time they have faced Liverpool in the FA Cup.

The two teams drew 0-0 at Roots Hall in January 1979 in front of 31,036 fans before Liverpool won the replay 3-0 at Anfield.

Southend held Liverpool to a 1-1 at Anfield in January 1958 and then lost the replay at Roots Hall 3-2.

But Blues won 2-1 in the first match between the two sides in 1957 at Roots Hall in the FA Cup.

And a potential rematch is already exciting Southend’s fans and their former striker Stan Collymore, who also played for Liverpool in his career.

“I hope Southend can beat Oldham and get to Anfield,” wrote Collymore on his Twitter page.

“I remember trips to Huddersfield and Sheffield Wednesday with Southend and they were great days. “I remember 5,000 Southend fans going to Sheffield Wednesday and the support was awesome.”

The third round tie between Liverpool and Blues or Oldham will take place over the weekend of January 7.
