PLYMOUTH Argyle have launched an in-vestigation in to claims a Southend United player was racially abused at Home Park on Saturday.

A Pilgrims fan made a complaint to the police during the 2-2 draw after hearing abuse which is believed to have been aimed in the direction of Blues winger Bilel Mohsni.

But a Southend spokesman confirmed they had not reported the incident.

“Neither the football club, nor the player concerned, has made any complaint to Plymouth Argyle or the relevant authorities,” said the spokesman.

“However, Southend United fully supports Plymouth Argyle’s investigation and will assist in any way we can if required to do so.

“Racism has no part in United believes everyone has the right to attend matches free from abuse.

“The club operates a zero tolerance policy on discrimination of any kind and is a long-standing strong supporter of the Kick Racism Out of Football campaign.”

Plymouth also issued a club statement about the incident in which the Devon side insisted they were taking the matter seriously.

“We have received a number of complaints relating to crowd behaviour during Saturday’s game,” said the statement. “We are currently conducting a thorough investigation into these complaints.”

Argyle added they will issue a full statement once the investigation has concluded.

A spokesman for the Pilgrims supporters group said: “The Argyle Fans’ Trust is aware of a small number of incidents this season involving unacceptable and often aggressive chanting or comments.

“That includes comments many would understand to be racist or homophobic in tone. My beliefs and values are such that it makes me sick to the pit of my stomach to imagine anyone being discriminated against for any reason.

“On Saturday an incident involving abuse coming from a supporter towards the Barn Park end of the Lyndhurst Stand was reported to the police by a Fan’s Trust member.

“Our message to any so-called fans who cannot put aside their own bigotry for 90 minutes is simple: you are not welcome at Home Park.”
