CAMERON Belford is chasing happier memories of Southend United.

Blues' new on loan goalkeeper made an assured debut between the sticks in Saturday's 2-0 win at Burton Albion.

But his only previous memory of Paul Sturrock's side was fracturing his cheekbone against them in October 2010.

“Hopefully after this loan spell I won't just associate Southend with shattering my cheekbone,” said Belford, who is with Southend from Bury for at least the next month.

“I clashed with Barry Corr to pick up the injury but that's just football and these things happen.

“One of my first games back was also the return fixture against Southend and I had to play in a mask to protect my face.

“We drew 1-1 and let in a last minute equaliser so it would be nice to have some happy memories of the club as well.”

Belford replaced the injured Glenn Morris between the sticks at the Pirelli Stadium and made a couple of fine saves in the first half.

But that came only hours after his switch from Bury was completed.

“I didn't hear anything about the move until late on Friday night and I didn't meet the rest of the lads until the morning of the game,” said Belford.

“I went on the internet to learn their names and will need to make sure I do well because the captain here Chris Barker is the brother of my manager at Bury.”
