PAUL Sturrock insisted last night’s 0-0 draw with Crawley Town felt more like a victory for his Southend United side.

Blues had to play almost 17 minutes with only nine men after skipper Chris Barker was sent off and striker Liam Dickinson got injured.

But they were still able to secure a share of the spoils and that delighted Sturrock.

“Playing with 10 men can be a problem but nine is something else so it definitely feels more like a win,” said Sturrock.

“All the players responded properly to the situation and the attitude and work-rate was spot on.

“When that’s the case we’re a really good side but we also got a little bit fortunate at times and I’m sure Crawley will be aggrieved at not having got the three points.”

The visitors were unable to find a way past Blues’ on loan goalkeeper Cameron Belford who saved a second half spot kick from Billy Clarke.

And Sturrock was full of praise for his latest shot-stopper.

“The keeper made some very good saves,” said the Scotsman.

“He won promotion from this league with Bury last season and even though he looks about 35 he’s only 23.

“He kicks well and is really keen to do well.

“His attitude is infectious and the lads have taken to him already.”

The only disappointment on the night was an ankle injury to Liam Dickinson.

The striker had to leave the pitch on a stretcher.

But Sturrock does not yet know how long Blues’ top goalscorer will be out for.

“We need to wait for the swelling to go down and then maybe send him for a scan as well,” said Sturrock.

“It’s too early at this stage to know just how serious it is.”
