SOUTHEND United’s top goalscorer Liam Dickinson has been ruled out for the rest of the season after breaking his ankle in Monday night’s 0-0 draw against Crawley Town.
Dickinson, who has hit the back of the net 12 times for Blues this season, was stretchered off in the 80th minute at Roots Hall after awkwardly going into a challenge with Crawley defender Warren Cummings.
And the striker (pictured right) will now be out of action for at least four months.
“It’s been confirmed that my ankle is broken and I will have to have an operation on it on Monday,” said Dickinson.
“I will be out for about four months but will be in the stands to watch the lads win promotion.”
Dickinson also added his thanks for the support which had already come his way from his team-mates and fans.
But Blues boss Paul Sturrock admitted the injury was a huge blow for his side who are currently battling for automatic promotion.
“It’s obviously very disappointing for Liam and ourselves,” said Sturrock.
“There’s never a good time to lose your top goalscorer and we will have to consider what to do for the remainder of the season.”
Southend are still able to bring in a replacement on loan.
