Rochford Hundred men have held their March Sunday medal which also acts as a qualifier for the top four placed competitors for the AA Thornton cup.

The contest took place in very blustery, wet conditions with scoring proving very tough.

Gary Matthews was victorious in division one by a four shot margin, his win largely due to shooting a very consistent eight pars on his front nine on his way to returning an excellent 75-5=70.

Lee Winsor (79-5=74) gained second place with 11 pars and a birdie, but a triple bogey on the par five 16th cost him any chance of a win.

Following them home in third was Tony Hadley (78-3=75) who posted 13 pars, but unfortunately also had two double bogeys.

Graham Collins secured a one shot victory in a close scoring second division with a couple of birdies and a strong run of pars through the latter part of his front nine to return 79-7=72.

Five players battled for minor honours and were all separated on countback.

Stan Ferguson (79-6=73) by courtesy of birdies on both par fives on the back nine managed to pip Gary Jones (82-9=73).

Best net score of the day went to division three golfer Philip Parke who managed 11 pars in his fine 79-13=66 to also gain a new playing handicap of 12.

Former club captain Trevor Watson (84-16=68) was another to earn a handicap reduction on his way to second place ahead of Phillip Goodwin (85-15=70).

Rochford ladies have also held two competitions.

Their midweek Stableford was won by Kay Campbell-Carr with 30 points, beating Elaine Tucker and Pat Lowndes who both returned 27 points.

That was followed by the annual locals versus foreigners matchplay competition with the locals holding sway by a margin of 10.5 to 4-5.
