RYMAN PREMIER: Title-chasing Billericay suffered a surprise 2-2 draw again bottom side Horsham at New Lodge on Saturday.
Town came from behind twice during a tense match which they dominated, but could not take the chances they created.
Glenn Poole and Dave Collis had good opportunities for Town inside the first 10 minutes before Sam Berry had to depart with ligament damage, which boss Craig Edwards said could end the right-back’s season.
Disaster struck on the half hour as Chris Wild and James Hawes played the ball around in their own area for too long, with Horsham winger Tony Nwachukwu springing into action to get a shot in.
Despite Dale Brightly’s save, Daniel Morris hit the rebound into the net with the visitors’ first real chance of the game.
After struggling to string passes together having conceded, Town equalised just before half time when Courtnay White slid in to score, pouncing on Harrison Chatting’s saved shot.
But in the 58th minute, Horsham took a surprise lead for the second time when a swift counterattack saw Nwackukwu break through to coolly slot home.
The visitors kept men behind the ball after retaking the lead, but Town levelled things again in the 65th minute through a Jay May header from a Collis free kick.
But Horsham nearly made it 3-2 six minutes later when Nwackukwu broke away again, outpacing Richard Halle.
Brightly sprinted out and was adjudged to have fouled the winger. However, referee Darren Blunden gave a free kick and just a yellow, despite the goalkeeper being the last man.
Town finished stronger with identical great chances for Wild in the 85th minute and deep into injury time as he connected well with Poole corners, both just grazing the crossbar.
Edwards admitted the result was disappointing, adding Hornchurch’s 2-0 loss to Hendon did not add a silver lining.
He said: “The first goal made me angry. We told them before the game you cannot afford to give a side like this a lead because it gives them a boost.
“There are many dangerous games now everywhere. I would be very surprised though if the boys didn’t bounce back next week though.”
