CASEY Stoney was left in tears after Great Britain’s ladies football crashed out of the Olympic Games at the quarter final stage, losing 2-0 to Canada.

The Basildon born defender had been hoping to lead the side to a medal.

And she was unable to hide her anguish at the final whistle.

“We’re devastated, heartbroken and gutted about it,” said Stoney, who grew up in Wickford .

“We can play better than we did against Canada and that’s the most frustrating thing about it all because we all know what we’re capable of doing.”

However, the defeat at Coventry City’s Ricoh Arena on Friday night was shrouded in controversy as Britain had two strong shouts for a penalty turned down.

And Stoney also felt both of Canada’s goal should have been disallowed.

“I am disappointed with the person in the middle because we had an absolute stonewall penalty not given,” said Stoney.

“We had another shout turned down and I think there was a foul in the lead-up to the first corner where they scored."

“I also think Kim Little won the ball for the free-kick which led to their second so things didn’t go our way and could have been different.

“But either way we conceded from two set pieces and it’s just disappointing all round.

“That’s why I was crying like a baby at the end as well because I’m not getting any younger so the chances to win things are getting slimmer."
