JONTY Clarke wants to continue his goalscoring form to help Great Britain’s hockey team surge into the semi-finals of the Olympic Games tonight.

Britain need just a draw against Spain at the Riverbank Arena to make sure of their place in the final four.

And Clarke, who has scored in his side’s last two games, wants Britain to extend their unbeaten run of results in the Games to keep their medal dreams alive.

“We haven’t lost so far and we need to keep that going,” said Rochford -born Clarke.

“We did well to come back to draw with Australia on Sunday but it doesn’t mean much because it’s still all about the game with Spain.”

Britain are currently second in Group A of the competition, just a point clear of third-placed Pakistan and Spain, in fourth.

And, with just the top two going through to the next stage, the hosts will need all of the fighting spirit they showed on Sunday when coming back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with gold medal favourites Australia.

“We had a poor start but a really good second half,” said Clarke, who scored Britain’s first goal.

“We will always fight for the whole game and I think we showed that again in that match.

“I think as a nation we are fighters and having the crowd right behind us definitely helps as well.

“We took it one step at a time and pulled our way back into the game, which has given us more confidence going into the Spain match now.”

Clarke, a former Southend High School pupil, also netted for Great Britain in their 4-1 win over Pakistan on Friday.

But he admitted to being slightly fortunate to have claimed the goal against Australia.

“My goal was actually put in by them,” said Clarke.

“However, they all count and I was pleased to help us come back to get the draw.

“Now hopefully we can get the result we need today to make sure we’re in the semi-finals.”

Tonight’s match against Spain starts at 7pm.
