WE get our league season underway again tomorrow against Accrington Stanley and we’re all very much looking forward to it.
The last two games, against Tottenham Hotspur and Peterborough United, kicked us in the teeth a little bit, but before then I had been really pleased with how everything had been going.
Pre-season had been pleasing but then those matches, against quality opposition, showed up where we are a bit short in the team at present.
We know we need to sign a central midfielder and we had a look at a couple in training yesterday and they will be back in again this morning.
I’m not willing to say who they are but if they do well then we might look to do something before we play Accrington.
We still have John Spicer and Stephen Brogan training with us too but I think it would be unfair for me to say anything about their futures until I’ve spoken to them.
Injuries aren’t helping our cause at the moment either and that’s the most frustrating thing for me at the moment.
We have one or two who will have a late fitness test before deciding if they can play but it was a big disappointing when Barry Corr broke down again.
His knee is actually fine now but he’s picked up a groin problem which is proving difficult to shake off.
After being out for so long it’s natural to pick up further knocks when your body adjusts to an increased work-load.
But hopefully it won’t be too long until he’s back in contention.
The same can also be said of Michael Timlin who I think we really miss in the midfield at the moment.
He should be back in training within the next fortnight though so, touch wood, he’s nearer a return because we need him back out there.
Accrington will be a difficult test tomorrow and they’re always a tough team to play.
We obviously want to get off to a good start but I once lost the first four games of a season with Plymouth and still went on to win the league with more than 100 points.
It’s a very long season but, with this weekend being our first home game, I do hope the fans will be right behind us.
